At D1, drone safety is paramount for the industry to continue to grow. CASA is the Civil Aviation Safety Authority in Australia and has set out recreational drone rules that all pilots must follow.
CASA's drone rules for recreational pilots in Australia. Follow these to fly safely and legally.
You must not fly your drone higher than 120 metres (400 feet) above ground level.
You must keep your drone at least 30 metres away from other people.
You must only fly one drone at a time.
You must keep your drone within visual line-of-sight. Always be able to see the drone with your own eyes (rather than through a device, screen or goggles).
You must not fly over or above people or in a populous area. This includes beaches, parks, events, or sport ovals where a game is in progress.
Respect personal privacy. Don't record or photograph people without their consent — this may breach other laws.
If your drone weighs more than 250g, fly at least 5.5 kilometres from a controlled airport. Use a drone safety app to check where you can fly.
You must not operate your drone in a way that creates a hazard to another aircraft, person, or property.
You must only fly during the day and must not fly through cloud or fog.
You must not fly over or near an area affecting public safety or where emergency operations are underway, including car crashes, police operations, fires, or search and rescue.
Near a helicopter landing site or smaller aerodrome without a control tower, you can fly within 5.5km. If you become aware of manned aircraft nearby, manoeuvre away and land as quickly and safely as possible.
If you fly your drone commercially, extra rules apply. You'll need to register your drone and get a licence or accreditation.
CASA-verified drone safety apps give location-based information with easy-to-use maps to help show where you can and can't fly. Always check your local and state rules before you fly.
Our team at D1 Labs have created drone safety accessories to help keep your operations safe and professional, even when the public gets curious.
