The latest FPV drone to join the DJI drone fleet, the new DJI Avata drone offers pilots a new way to navigate tough environments and capture thrilling footage. However, the DJI Avata is not compatible with the standard DJI RC, so which remote controllers are compatible with the DJI Avata drone? Let’s take a look and find out.
What Controllers Are Compatible with DJI Avata?
DJI RC Motion 2
The latest remote controller release from DJI, the DJI RC Motion 2 is the updated version of the DJI Motion Controller (see below) and provides the premier motion-based flight method for DJI Avata. The DJI RC Motion is included in the new 2023 version of the DJI Avata Pro-View Combo and the DJI Avata Explorer Combo that comes with the DJI Goggles Integra headset.

Redesigned to support fluid flight with the DJI Avata drone, the DJI RC Motion 2 is the successor to the original DJI Motion Controller and provides pilots with a fun, intuitive way to experience FPV. Unlike traditional stick-based remote controllers, the RC Motion 2 uses natural movement and hand gestures to control your drone’s flight, just like the primary joystick of a fighter jet!

DJI Motion Controller
First released alongside the DJI FPV drone in 2021, the DJI Motion Controller offers intuitive flight control unlike any other controller to come before it. Unlike other controllers, the DJI Motion Controller is operated with a single hand and responds intuitively to your natural hand motions to guide the flight path of the DJI Avata drone.
The DJI Motion Controller is included by default with the DJI Avata in both the DJI Avata Pro-View and Fly Smart Combos.

DJI FPV Remote Controller 2
Pilots of the original DJI FPV drone from 2021 will be familiar with this one; the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2. This controller adopts the more traditional ‘video-game’ controller design for greater comfort and ergonomics when piloting. This controller features precision joysticks that offer greater control over drone movements.
It’s also important to note that the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 is the only controller that allows you to pilot the DJI Avata in M mode and reach its top speed of 97 KM/h.

- Remote Controller 2
Offering a more traditional drone controller experience, the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 features an ultra-low latency of 7ms for lightning-quick responses for all controls. Sporting an ergonomic controller design that will fit your palms perfectly, the DJI FPV Controller 2 is great for those who feel at home with a video game controller in their hands.

What About Other DJI Remote Controllers?
Is DJI RC compatible with DJI Avata? Is DJI RC Pro compatible with DJI Avata? What about DJI RC–N1?
For the sake of efficiency, we’ll answer these three questions in one quick hit.
If you’re a DJI enthusiast and own a DJI Mini, Mavic or Air series drone, chances are you already own a DJI remote controller. These controllers, including the DJI RC-N1, DJI RC and DJI RC Pro, are unfortunately NOT compatible with the DJI Avata drone.
Why? It’s fairly simple. Traditional camera drones provide a live camera feed to the pilot via live video transmission (OcuSync technology) which is then shown on a display. As an FPV drone, the DJI Avata transmits video to the pilot’s FPV goggles and requires a lower latency transmission that is not supported by these other remote controllers.
Additionally, the DJI RC Motion 2, Motion Controller and FPV Remote Controller 2 are all specifically designed and optimised to support the high-speed flight and greater manoeuvrability of the DJI Avata drone. If the Avata were to be flown using a controller like the DJI RC-N1, the overall Avata experience would be hampered, not allowing pilots to fully harness the flexible capabilities of the DJI Avata drone.
